Mt. Carmel High School - Fire Science & First ResponderThe first picture is of my Fire Science class. Each year we take a class picture that I put up on my classroom wall. You can see all the new orange gloves. It's important for the student to be able to function, while wearing gloves. Even more important is we have never had a hand injury in class.
Thank you Kelly McGinnis Memorial Foundation for your interest and for your very generous donation to our program. ~ Bill Briscoe

The second picture is of a First Responder student after being strapped into a half back board. You notice the tape being used. In the field a lot of fire departments use tape to secure their patients to backboards. Here the students are learning how to do it.
The third picture is of my Fire Science students with their safety glasses. You notice we are in direct sunlight. The safety glasses not only protect them from trauma injuries, they also protect from harmful UV sunlight. I spent many an hour in direct sunlight when I was a firefighter and I'm now loosing my eyesight because I did not protect my eyes properly. It's very important to me to protect the student's eyes.
Forth picture is of my First Responder students using the scoop stretcher to pick up an injured person. Notice with a scoop stretcher we can pickup the patient without having to roll them onto their back. The students are able to get more hands on training moving patients, thanks to our new scoop stretcher.
Fifth and last picture is of Tristin (great young man) modeling our suspenders. You would not think suspenders are as important as they are. If you have ever worn fire turnout pants you find they start to sag when you get them wet. Once they sag you start walking on the cuff of the pant leg and you destroy the pant leg. A good pair of suspenders prevents this from happening.
I did not get a picture of this but recently we had a class on how not to panic if you accidentally fall into a swimming pool with all your fire gear on. In class, the students put on all their gear (breathing apparatus included) and we throw them into the school's swimming pool. The students find out very quickly that fire gear traps air and your buoyant. After class is over we have a lot of very wet gear! We used our new hangers to hang up all of our gear preventing mildew. Normal hangers just don't work because of all the weight.
